The complete genetic blueprints of wFur, the male-killing Wolbachia found in Ostrinia furnacalis, and wSca, found in Ostrinia scapulalis, were determined by our study of their genome sequences. A remarkable degree of homology existed between the two genomes, exceeding 95% in predicted protein sequence identity. Genomic comparison between these two organisms shows virtually no evolutionary change, primarily due to the frequent genome rearrangements and the rapid evolution of proteins containing ankyrin repeats.
